  WHAT A SUCCESS!
Gran County Humane Society Animal Shelter

The High Desert Humane Society's annual Yard Sale was again a huge success. Many thanks to Ron and Jan Wofford who ran a tight ship with a great crew that made them a pleasure to work with. Their dedication and long hours made this years sale one of the best ever.

A large crowd had gathered at the front gate eagerly awaiting opening time on Friday, so as to be the first in the door for some great deals.

Many thanks to all the wonderful caring people who donated their usable items and their time to help make this fund raiser a success.

Funds raised will go into the shelters H.A.L.T. spay and neuter program. Last year the shelter help to spay or neuter over 500 companion animals for Grant County residents.

Cash's favorite spot on the file cabinet

Long time shelter mascot "Cash" has passed away.

Diagnosed with diabetes, his quality of life had greatly deteriorated, so shelter staff made the difficult decision to have him humanely put to sleep.
Cash entered our shelter many years ago, allowed to run loose he had been chased by dogs up into the engine of a running car. He sustained large lacerations and burns along one side and spent five days hiding in a wood pile. Weak from hunger and blood lose he was brought into the shelter. Then shelter director "Ellen Cline" and animal control officer "Buddy Howard" made the choice to take the injured animal to Arenas Valley Animal Clinic where Dr Wenzel cleaned and stitched him back together. After a long recuperation he was returned to good health and spent the rest of his years roaming the halls of the animal shelter.
Due to the large vet bill involved a plea was made to the residents of Grant County for assistance. Not only did the shelter receive enough funds to cover "Cash's" bill but the excess money donated helped cover vet expenses for other animals. That fund later became know as "Rosie's Fund" and monies donated into the fund continue to help animals in need.
Many times over the past a call has been made to help an injured animal and the people of our community have opened their hearts. Once again the staff here at the shelter would like to thank the caring and thoughtful residents of Grant County for their generosity.
Cash will be remembered by all for his beautiful blue eyes and snow white coat. He greeted people for many years, helping them to fill out paperwork, leaving masses of white hair on everything and batting at small children. We will miss him.
