The shelter would like to thank the caring citizens who brought donations of all sorts to the shelter during this time of need.
Board members arrived shortly after 4:00pm on 3/7 and began preparations for incoming animals. Home owners displaced by the fire dropped off animals before heading on to the convention center or to homes of family and friends where they waited for news of the damages. Board members kept the shelter open for over 24 hours to provide services for pet owners in need. Regular business hours resumed on 3/9 and victims of the fire were able to reclaim their pets at no charge.
During the lock down of the effected area Silver City ACO Sherwood Nance, shelter workers, board member Frank Ogas and volunteer Robert Shoaf, spent hours checking on animals for worried pet owners. They did home welfare checks while providing food and water for cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits and pigeons still in the area. When needed they transported animals to the shelter.
Soon after hearing that home owners would be allowed back into the area late Tuesday evening people began to pickup their pets from the shelter. Many happy reunions were held in the shelters lobby. All together the shelter housed 49 cats and dogs and 2 goats. All have returned home with their owners.
Again we would like to thank all the folks that donated money and pet supplies, volunteered their time and services to help with the animals at the shelter or offered to foster care to pet owner.
